Exported goods from Torkham border – Pakistan arrive with returning vehicles

Trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan via the Torkham border has been suspended for a week due to visa restrictions, causing frustration among transporters. Over 100 vehicles loaded with perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, and fish have been taken back to Peshawar, while another 30 vehicles returned last week. Both Pakistani and Afghan transporters and businessmen have suffered significant financial losses as a result. There are concerns that Pakistani goods may permanently lose the Afghan market to other neighboring countries, as Iranian counterparts have already rushed in with trade goods following the suspension. To prevent further losses, it is suggested that visa restrictions for Afghan transporters be relaxed for at least three months, and for Afghan transporters to be given an opportunity to obtain their passports on an emergency basis.
