Pakistan’s Election Commission has rejected former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s bid to contest the 2024 parliamentary elections, citing his disqualification following conviction in a corruption case. Despite being barred from politics for five years, the 71-year-old filed nomination papers, but they were disallowed due to his conviction and disqualification under the Constitution. Khan’s party, Pakistan Tahreek-e Insaf (PTI), has accused authorities of preventing most of its candidates from participating in the upcoming elections. The election body also rejected nomination bids from other senior members of PTI, while accepting a bid from former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who still needs to remove a life ban on holding public office. The PTI has accused authorities of favoring other parties, including Sharif’s Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), by allowing their nomination papers while rejecting most of PTI’s candidates.
