The Election Commission of Pakistan has required political parties to submit their candidates’ list within five days to ensure that at least five percent of women candidates are allocated general seats under Section 206 of the Elections Act, 2017. This is in an effort to comply with poll rules. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which lost its electoral symbol, had fielded 20 women nominees for general seats out of a total of 234 candidates. The PTI candidates will now contest elections independently since the party is without a symbol. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also stated that their quota for women exceeds five percent as mandated by ECP rules. They also mentioned that the ECP should have issued the directive for compliance with Section 206 sooner to ensure the fielding of women candidates on general seats before the award of party tickets.
