The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Omar Hamid Khan has announced that the electoral watchdog will be submitting a petition to the Supreme Court against the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) decision to suspend the appointment of returning officers (ROs) and district returning officers (DROs) from the bureaucracy. The ECP had previously paused training sessions for ROs and DROs in response to the LHC’s order, creating concerns about the upcoming general elections. The LHC’s ruling, which came after a petition from the PTI, has caused uncertainty surrounding the election schedule. Major political parties such as PPP, PML-N, and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) have decided to become parties in the case being heard by the LHC. They are seeking a timely conduct of the elections on Feb 8. The PTI has been accused of trying to delay the elections, with PPP and PML-N expressing their readiness for polls. The situation is evolving and being updated as more information becomes available.
