Lahore: Renowned singer and author Dr. Amjad Parvez has passed away.
Dr. Amjad Parvez had been ill for a month and passed away yesterday due to kidney failure. His funeral prayers will be offered after the afternoon prayers on Monday at Jamia Masjid Shadman Chowk in Lahore. Dr. Amjad Parvez was an engineer by profession, author of several Urdu and English books, and a singer.
In 1954, he participated for the first time as a child artist in the program “Honhar” from Radio Pakistan Lahore center and remained associated with radio throughout his life. Nowadays, he was presenting his analysis on the art and personality of the queen of melody, Noor Jahan, in Radio Pakistan Lahore’s program “Fun and Artist”.
Dr. Amjad Parvez received formal training in classical music from Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan, Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Ustad Ghulam Shabbir Khan, Ustad Ghulam Jaffer Khan, Ikhlaq Hussain Akhian, and Mian Shehriyar. In the 1970s, more than 100 ghazals and songs sung by Dr. Amjad Parvez were published from Radio Pakistan Lahore center.
Apart from music, Dr. Amjad Parvez wrote many books as well. He wrote columns in a national newspaper for a long time, which were also published in book form in 2006 and 2011. In addition, Dr. Amjad Parvez wrote in detail about 47 music composers from Pakistan and India who worked during the three decades from 1950 to 1980 in his book “Melodies of the Subcontinent”, which was published in 2012.
Dr. Amjad Parvez wrote two books under the name Melody Singers, while “Rainbow of Reflections” was his last English book. In 1977, he was awarded the Gold Medal for writing the best technical paper, the Dr. AQ Khan Life Time Achievement Award in 2009, and the Presidential Performance Award in 2000 for outstanding performance.
Upon the passing of Dr. Amjad Parvez, personalities associated with the showbiz industry expressed their sorrow and recognized him as a symbol of Pakistani music.
