Overcome with a rush of emotions – anxiety, stress, happiness, excitement, and even fear – I refused to let them interfere with the incredible opportunity ahead. I had long hoped and prayed for this moment, and now, the head of the visa office at the Indian High Commission had confirmed I was one of the select journalists from Pakistan allowed to apply for a visa to cover the 50-over Cup.

For years, I had dreamed of covering major sporting events, making it a driving force in my career as a sports journalist. Visiting India had always been on my bucket list, particularly due to my ancestral ties. And now, these two dreams were coming together, creating an exhilarating experience. However, it had all seemed uncertain for Pakistani journalists seeking to cover the World Cup. The tournament schedule was announced just three months before it began, with media accreditations confirmed only a month prior. This left very little time to prepare for such a significant event. Many journalists, myself included, had given up hope when we heard that a go-ahead from the Indian High Commission was necessary for visa processing. There was no communication even after the World Cup had started. So, when I received the call, everything changed.

Rapid travel arrangements were made, and my wardrobe was packed haphazardly into a suitcase as I prepared to embark on this unforgettable journey. The following day, I found myself at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, eagerly awaiting news of my visa status. After an excruciating wait, I was informed that it was likely I would be traveling to India. Still, I needed to see my passport with the visa stamp before it truly sunk in. The next day, my first-ever visa stamp to visit five cities in India was in my hands – it was really happening!

Despite feelings of anxiety, stress, and political tensions between the two countries, I decided not to let the emotions get in the way of this incredible opportunity. After a quick trip to Lahore, I headed to the Wagah Border, the starting point of my journey to India. As I crossed the Zero Line, I felt deep gratitude as I saw my dream come to life.

From there, my journey was filled with heartwarming encounters, impactful experiences, and thrilling moments. As I arrived in different cities – from Amritsar to Ahmedabad to Bangalore – I found myself immersed in the rich culture, fascinating landscapes, and welcoming people of India. I was able to soak in the sights, sounds, and flavors of each city, making memories that would last a lifetime.

In Bangalore, I had the opportunity to cover the team practice at the historic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, meet legendary cricketers, and even shake off my nerves with the help of newfound friends in the vibrant country. Every step of the way, I was reminded of the power of sports and the universal bond it creates, transcending borders and uniting people from different walks of life.

As I reflect on this remarkable journey, I can still feel the wave of emotions that swept over me. But one thing is for certain – the anticipation, the journey, and the unforgettable experiences were all worth it. My dream had come to life in the most incredible way, and I wouldn’t change a single moment of it.
