The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that 72 out of 99 journalists killed globally in 2023 were Palestinians reporting on Israel’s war on Gaza, making it the deadliest year for the media in almost a decade. The CPJ stated that without the deaths in the ongoing war on Gaza, global journalist killings would have decreased year-on-year. The organization highlighted the important role of Palestinian journalists in reporting on the conflict, as international journalists have limited access to Gaza. The CPJ also criticized the lack of public solidarity with Palestinian journalists during the war on Gaza. The organization is investigating whether a dozen journalists killed in the Gaza conflict were deliberately targeted by Israeli soldiers, which would be considered a war crime. The CPJ’s report also noted the highest death toll for journalists since 2015 and highlighted the reduction in journalist fatalities in Ukraine and Mexico. In the Palestinian territories, journalists face the risk of Israeli bombardment or arrest even when they are not on the job. The CPJ is documenting attacks against journalists in Gaza for potential future legal action.
