In the southern Gaza town of Bani Suhaila, Jamil Abu Assi and his cousins have taken up the task of cooking meals for those displaced by Israel’s attacks and siege on Gaza. Their kitchen was destroyed during the 2014 Israeli offensive, prompting them to shift their focus towards helping others. With one million Palestinians internally displaced since the recent bombings began, the family now cooks 2,000 meals daily to feed those who have sought refuge in Khan Younis. These meals typically consist of rice, lentils, and freekeh, as meat has become scarce. Many butchers have closed due to damage from Israeli bombs and supply shortages. Despite the challenging circumstances, the family remains committed to alleviating the crisis and supporting their community. Abu Assi’s own refugee background from Jaffa adds personal significance and determination to his efforts. He believes that the social solidarity and collaboration in Khan Younis will help ensure that nobody goes hungry. Volunteers distribute meals to those staying in UNRWA schools, offering a sense of security and support for those in need. The community’s unity and resilience shine through, even amidst the ongoing trauma and hardships caused by the conflict.
