In Taiwan, the recent surprise attack on Israel by Hamas has raised concerns about its own national security. The Taiwanese military, living under the threat of China’s promise to unify Taiwan with China by force if necessary, has taken notice of the attack and its implications. Following the attack, the Taiwanese defense ministry established a task force to learn from the Israel-Gaza war. The defense minister, Chiu Kuo-cheng, emphasized the importance of intelligence gathering in countering China’s threats. Taiwan’s geographic separation from China’s east coast by the Taiwan Strait provides a natural barrier and early warning system in the event of a surprise attack. However, the successful Hamas raid has made Taiwanese military members like Tony Wei question their own capabilities against a determined Chinese military. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has been working to modernize the country’s military and strengthen its defenses. Taiwan has also looked to the war in Ukraine for lessons, focusing on the importance of information warfare and countering disinformation. Taiwan’s government has allocated more funding to the military, extended compulsory military service, purchased new missile systems, and unveiled its first domestically built submarine. In addition, Taiwan has launched a ministry of digital affairs to combat disinformation and has initiated campaigns to tell its own story and gain international support. Winning the war of narratives and obtaining international backing is seen as crucial for Taiwan in any potential conflict with China.
