In Nairobi, international delegates are considering two options as they work towards a treaty to combat global plastic pollution. Kenyan President William Ruto has urged negotiators to reach a deal before the end of 2023, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The meeting is hosted by UNEP, where discussions will focus on the massive amount of plastic waste produced annually and the need for increased recycling. With less than 10 percent of plastic waste being recycled and millions of tonnes ending up in oceans, the need for action is clear.

Delegates are divided on the best approach, with some advocating for a comprehensive strategy targeting plastics production, while others prefer a more limited focus on waste management. Countries like Kenya are pushing for a strong, binding agreement, while the plastics industry and petrochemical suppliers prefer a more restricted approach. The meeting in Nairobi is attended by over 2,000 delegates, including representatives from various industries and environmental organizations, with the majority eager to advance negotiations. However, a small group of countries, mainly major fossil fuel and petrochemical exporters, are acting to hinder progress. The push and pull between these factions will shape the outcome of the discussions.
