Several Muslim-owned shopfronts in Mumbai have been torn down by authorities after communal clashes sparked by the opening of a divisive Hindu temple by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Minor clashes broke out in parts of the city, and shopfronts belonging to Muslims were demolished. This “bulldozer justice” has been criticized by rights groups as an unfair targeting of the country’s Muslim minority. The clashes occurred ahead of the inauguration of a new Hindu temple in the northern city of Ayodhya, leading to at least 13 arrests.
