Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Justice Qazi Faez Isa, expressed doubts about the sincerity of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) during a Supreme Court hearing on petitions related to the Faizabad dharna case. The hearing was attended by a three-member bench, including CJP Isa, Justice Aminuddin Khan, and Justice Athar Minallah. The court reviewed a judgement authored by Justice Isa prior to his appointment as Chief Justice that called for penalizing personnel who violated their oaths and monitoring and prosecuting individuals advocating hate, extremism, and terrorism. The judgement also criticized various government departments for causing inconvenience to the public during the sit-in. Several petitions were filed against the judgement, but most were withdrawn, prompting the CJP to question why nobody was willing to speak the truth. In a subsequent hearing, former Pemra chairman Absar Alam submitted a statement detailing the manipulation of news channels by an intelligence agency. Today, the court heard arguments from the Attorney General for Pakistan, Absar Alam, the Election Commission of Pakistan, and Pemra. The court dismissed review pleas filed by several parties and issued notices to Sheikh Rashid for failing to appear in court, adjourning the hearing until November 15. During the hearing, Justice Isa raised questions about Alam’s allegations and suggested the formation of a commission to investigate the matter further. The court rejected the government’s fact-finding panel, deeming it inadequate and emphasizing the need to ensure the supremacy of the Constitution. The CJP also questioned the independence of various institutions, including the ECP, and raised concerns about individuals involved in rioting returning to Pakistan without facing consequences.
