Dozens of people are still missing after a pre-dawn landslide in southwestern Yunnan, China, buried two villages in mountainous Zhengxiong County. At least nine people have been confirmed dead, with two others rescued. The affected area is known for its steep rugged mountains that are currently covered with snow. Hundreds of rescue workers, including soldiers, are conducting a search for survivors. Yunnan is currently experiencing bitterly cold temperatures, and recent avalanches in northwestern China have trapped more than 1,000 people for a week. Landslides, often caused by rain or unsafe construction work, are not uncommon in China, and last year at least 70 people were killed in landslides.
