China has announced plans to increase law enforcement patrols near Taiwan following a fatal incident involving a Chinese boat and the Taiwanese coast guard. The boat capsized near the Kinmen islands, with two of the four crew members dying. The Chinese coast guard intends to conduct regular patrols in the area to maintain order and protect fishermen’s safety. China has condemned Taiwan for the incident and called for the release of the two surviving crew members. Taiwan, in turn, blames Beijing and says the boat was within prohibited waters near the Kinmen islands. This situation comes amidst tension across the Taiwan Strait, with Beijing claiming Taiwan as part of its territory and increasing military presence near the island. This follows a presidential election win in January by Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party, a figure that Beijing views as a separatist.
