Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters took to the streets of Washington in one of the largest demonstrations in the US since the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Their aim was to increase pressure on President Joe Biden to withdraw support for the Jewish state. Similar protests were held in cities across the US, where Israel was denounced and the Biden administration was urged to pressure Israel to end its perceived genocide of the Palestinian people. In Washington, the predominantly young protesters marched towards the White House, shouting slogans and waving Palestinian flags. Some individuals threw red paint at the White House gates to symbolize the bloodshed in Gaza, while footage showed attempts to climb the fence around the president’s residence. Palestinian flags and signs were also placed on monuments around the city. The march was organized by various pro-Palestinian groups, who directed participants to Freedom Plaza before marching past the White House. The marchers sought a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict and a cessation of military aid from the US and other Western nations to Israel. Demonstrations in support of Palestine also took place in London, Berlin, Paris, Ankara, Istanbul, and other cities, with a similar message for Israel and supportive Western governments. US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib criticized President Biden for supporting what she called the “genocide” of the Palestinian people. According to reports, Israeli air strikes have killed over 9,500 Palestinians, including 3,800 children. Humanitarian organizations have reported dire conditions in Gaza, with over a million people displaced and facing severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. Entire neighborhoods have been leveled by Israeli air strikes, and the Israeli blockade has left Gaza without fuel deliveries and the risk of complete power loss, including in critical hospitals.
