Anwaarul Haq Kakar, a prominent figure in Balochistan politics, has been appointed as the eighth caretaker prime minister of Pakistan. As the country faces political and economic challenges, Kakar will assume the responsibility of leading the government.
Kakar comes from Qilla Saifullah and holds a Master’s degree in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Balochistan. He also pursued a degree in law in London but returned to Pakistan to pursue his political interests.
In his early political career, Kakar was associated with the PML-N party. However, he left the party after the end of the Nawaz government due to the military coup led by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999. He joined the PML-Q, a breakaway faction of the PML-N that supported Gen Musharraf.
Although he contested the 2002 general elections as a member of the PML-Q and lost, Kakar’s political journey continued. In 2013, he was appointed as the spokesperson for the Balochistan government after a coalition of the PML-N and nationalist parties formed a government in the province.
In 2018, Kakar was elected as an independent senator from Balochistan. Shortly after his election, he joined other independent lawmakers and PML-N dissidents to establish the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP). During his tenure, he served as the chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, as well as a member of various other committees.
While Kakar’s leadership position lasted for five years, he was replaced as the party opted for new leadership five months ago. Nevertheless, his contributions and proficiency in multiple languages, including English, Urdu, Persian, Pushto, Balochi, and Brahvi, are widely acknowledged.
With his diverse background and experience, Kakar will now lead the nation as interim prime minister, aiming to address the existing challenges and usher in a period of stability and progress for Pakistan.
