The administration of Karachi University has imposed a ban on the activities of two student organizations on the university campus following a violent clash between them. The clash occurred on the first day of the 2024 session, causing fear and panic among new students. As a result of the clash, two students were severely injured, prompting the university administration to immediately impose a ban on the activities of all student organizations on campus.

According to a notification issued by the Student Advisor, Dr. Noshin Raza, the ban will remain in place for student groups associated with political parties, and this action has been taken with the approval of the Vice Chancellor. The notification has also been forwarded to department chairpersons, institute directors, deans, and the Wing Commander 62 Wing.

The first day of the 2024 session saw the enrollment of 6,000 students in various morning programs, with ongoing enrollments for the evening program. The university held a dignified ceremony for the induction of new students in the morning as part of the orientation day, followed by departmental orientation events. Additionally, the student orientation for the evening program took place in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, members of one student organization attacked a group of students at the university library, resulting in a tense situation across the campus. Campus security advisor Professor Salman confirmed that two students were seriously injured in the library during the incident. Some students attempted to hide in administrative buildings to seek safety, but members of a student organization with batons and sticks entered the buildings in search of them. It is important to note that only three police officers arrived at the university due to a shortage of personnel, but they were unable to control either of the student organizations. However, later on, the police took a member of one student organization into custody from the admin block.

Speaking to “Express,” Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Iraqi said, “We want to provide a peaceful environment for our students to receive quality education, but if anyone disrupts the peace and security on campus, we will take action to ensure the safety of thousands of students.”
