Lahore: After Karachi, Eidhi Foundation has started the biometric process in Lahore for the identification of unclaimed bodies.
Hundreds of unclaimed bodies are buried in the graveyard near Mehmoodabad and Siggian in Lahore. Although their identities have not been determined yet, Eidhi Foundation has started the biometric process in Lahore after Karachi to identify the unclaimed bodies and search for their heirs.
Faisal Jalal, the Incharge of Eidhi Foundation in Lahore, told Express News that biometrics of 20 bodies have been done from January 1 till now, leading to the identification of heirs of four bodies. The search for heirs of 11 bodies is ongoing, while the biometric verification of the remaining bodies could not be done.
It is worth mentioning that when a police finds an unclaimed body, the fingerprints from both hands are obtained on paper and sent to the Forensic Department. However, identifying the heirs through this process was almost impossible.
Faisal Jalal mentioned that after biometrics, data sharing is done rarely, which helps in obtaining the record of the deceased person’s family. He stated that at the moment, only those bodies are biometrically processed whose identification is required by the police.
He also mentioned that the Inspector General of Punjab Police has been recommended to biometrically verify all the unclaimed bodies in government morgues in the province, hoping that progress will be made in this regard.
