The issue of stopping house selling at the University of Karachi has been brought to the attention of the Sindh government by the faculty and administration, as it is included in the syndicate’s agenda. A meeting was held on Monday afternoon in the Vice Chancellor’s office, chaired by Principal Secretary Agha Waseem, to discuss other controversial matters, including house selling. In addition to the Chairman of the Sindh HEC, Dr. Tariq Rafeeq, and the Secretary of Universities and Boards, Noor Samoon, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Khalid Iraq and a delegation of the Teachers Association, led by Dr. Saleh Rahman, were present at the meeting. According to sources, the meeting was informed by the Teachers Association that an attempt was made to mislead the syndicate by including house selling again in the agenda, even though house selling is approved through all forums. The university administration made it clear in the meeting that if a matter was approved by the Senate in 2005, it was included in the budget at that time and the budget is presented on an annual basis, so annual approval of any head included in the budget is essential. Now, 18 years have passed and the financial situation has changed significantly compared to the past. The matter of house selling has been written about by the HEC, the University and Boards Department, and the Governor’s House on at least 3 occasions, so it must be brought before the Statutory Body again. During the meeting, the Principal Secretary also commended the position of the University of Karachi in support of the faculty and said that it is commendable that you are receiving your salary on time, but no one knows if there will be funds after two months for salaries. It is clear that the Teachers Association is making every effort to ensure that this matter is not included in the agenda in any way, as the association’s elections are also approaching, after which presenting this matter to the syndicate for the administration is not less than a challenge. Furthermore, during the meeting, the presence of the Director of Finance of the University of Karachi was heavily criticized and his role was discussed, and a demand was made to remove him. According to a statement issued by the Teachers Association, during the discussion of the university’s financial situation, the Sindh government’s delegation emphasized the need for the University of Karachi to explore new opportunities for revenue generation in order to improve its financial condition. The Teachers Association welcomed this suggestion but also pointed out that instead of increasing fees for students under the name of Resource Generation, the administration should explore other opportunities. The matter of the remaining selection board approvals for 2014 was also discussed and its formal approval was granted.
