Rio de Janeiro: Heavy rainstorms in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil have resulted in widespread destruction, with 37 people dead and more than 70 missing.

According to a report by Reuters, there is concern of further increase in casualties due to the rains in the southern state, with over 23,000 people left homeless near the border with Uruguay and Argentina.

Southern Defense said that several cities in Brazil have been affected and the living conditions have been severely disrupted.

The report indicates that streets are resembling rivers in many cities, where roads and bridges have been destroyed, landslides have occurred, and the structure of hydroelectric power plants has partially collapsed.

Authorities have reported that another dam in Bentogonçalves is at risk of collapsing and residents have been ordered to evacuate to safer locations.

It should be noted that Rio Grande do Sul state had also faced heavy rainstorms in September last year, resulting in over 50 fatalities due to flooding caused by a cyclone.
