World Appeals for $1.5bn to Address Crises in Gaza to Afghanistan

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested $1.5 billion in funding to address the health needs of millions of individuals affected by numerous humanitarian crises worldwide, including in Ukraine, Gaza, and Afghanistan. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the goal is to provide life-saving assistance to approximately 87 million people this year. He emphasized the need for flexibility and early delivery of the funding to effectively respond to the emergencies. The WHO highlighted the urgent health needs in the occupied Palestinian territories, Ukraine, Haiti, and Sudan, with a particular focus on Gaza, where Israeli forces have been involved in a violent conflict. The WHO also identified Covid and Afghanistan as other major health emergencies requiring significant funding. Tedros stressed the importance of taking proactive measures and emphasized the serious consequences of inaction.
