The Nigerian authorities have reported that armed groups, also referred to as “bandits”, have attacked 20 communities and have injured over 300 people. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 100 people in various towns across central Nigeria, adding to the region’s ongoing religious and ethnic tensions. The toll of the attacks has risen to 113, as confirmed by local officials, and the government has vowed to take proactive measures to protect innocent civilians. The attacks have targeted at least 20 communities in the region and have caused significant intercommunal violence in recent years. Amnesty International has criticized the Nigerian authorities for failing to end these deadly attacks, while conflict and tensions continue to persist in the country’s northern and central regions. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation into a military drone strike that resulted in the deaths of 85 civilians during a religious celebration, with the governor of Kaduna attributing the deaths to a “bombing mishap”.
