Ilhan Omar, a United States Congress member, has been caught in a new controversy over alleged statements she made during a speech to Somali Americans. However, independent analyses of the speech have revealed that the words that sparked the uproar were mistranslated.

Despite the debunking of the accusations, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to censure Omar, accusing her of serving as a foreign agent for a foreign country. This move was met with criticism, with many viewing it as an attempt to weaponize Omar’s ethnicity and religion.

Omar quickly rejected the attacks, calling them false and rooted in xenophobia and Islamophobia. Critics see this controversy as another attempt by the Republican Party to attack a group of progressive Democrats known as the “Squad”.

The controversy also comes in the wake of Omar’s removal from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2023, amid accusations of voicing “anti-Semitic” and “anti-Israel” rhetoric. Moreover, the House also voted to censure Representative Rashida Tlaib for comments critical of Israel. Both Omar and Tlaib have stood by their remarks, rejecting claims of anti-Semitism.

The mistranslated speech, which ignited the current controversy, has been clarified by independent translations from the Star Tribune and the Minnesota Reformer. The accurate translation reveals that Omar was actually encouraging civic engagement among Somali Americans and advocating for longstanding US policy.

Democrats have widely rejected the notion that Omar’s comments indicate she is working on behalf of Somalia or putting her Somali roots before her congressional duties. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned Greene’s move to censure Omar as “frivolous” and “designed to inflame and castigate and further divide us.”
