US and UK forces have conducted airstrikes on 18 Houthi targets in Yemen, including underground weapons and missile storage facilities, according to officials. The military action was in response to increased attacks by the rebel group on ships in the Red Sea in protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

This marks the fourth joint attack on the Houthis by the US and UK since January 12. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that the strikes were intended to disrupt and weaken the capabilities of the Iranian-backed militia. The attacks have been supported by Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

In response, the Houthis have vowed to continue their military operations, denouncing the US and UK aggression. There have been 57 attacks on commercial and military ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden by the Houthis since November 19, with recent attacks targeting vessels like the MV Torm Thor.

Despite the attacks, no ships have been sunk or crew members harmed. However, concerns have been raised about the UK-registered Rubymar cargo vessel which was struck on February 18 and was carrying fertiliser that could potentially cause an environmental disaster if spilled into the Red Sea.

The conflict in Gaza has also led to increased tensions in other parts of the Middle East, with Hezbollah engaging in skirmishes with Israel along the Lebanon border and pro-Iranian Iraqi militia targeting US bases. The situation remains volatile as various groups continue their military activities in the region.
