UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor expressed concern about reports of police harassment of ongoing protests against enforced disappearances in Balochistan. Protests are taking place in Karachi, Punjab, and Balochistan in solidarity with the main sit-in by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) in the federal capital against enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. Lawlor discussed the ongoing protests with activists Dr Mahrang Baloch and Sammi Deen Baloch, who are organizers of the Islamabad protest. The police have been accused of harassing supporters and registering first information reports against them. Lawlor called the reports of police harassment concerning and called for spurious criminal complaints against peaceful protesters to be dropped. Dr Mahrang and Sammi briefed Lawlor on the police crackdown on peaceful protesters and the prime minister’s comments regarding Baloch missing persons. The Islamabad police rejected the accusations and Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir informed the Islamabad High Court that Baloch protesters outside the National Press Club were being threatened through a death squad, which the judge directed the station house officer to address. Dr Mahrang said the BYC would soon announce plans for a nationwide strike to demand transparency regarding missing persons. Despite harsh weather and pressure from law enforcement, the BYC camp continues to attract more participants.
