In the 2024 general elections, two independent candidates who emerged victorious have announced their decision to join the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), adding strength to the party’s position in the National Assembly (NA). These independent candidates have secured a total of 102 seats in the NA, out of the 257 seats that have been announced so far. Other successful candidates include those who were initially rejected by their parties but later won as independents. The PML-N and PPP have won 73 and 54 seats, respectively. Moreover, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement has secured 17 seats, while other parties like PML-Q, JUI-F, and IPP have also obtained seats. Additionally, two independent candidates from Islamabad and Rawalpindi have pledged their support to the PML-N. Barrister Aqeel Malik, the winner of Rawalpindi’s NA-54 seat, credited his victory to Nawaz Sharif, while Raja Khurram, the winner of Islamabad’s NA-48, was a joint candidate for IPP and PML-N. Earlier reports indicated that the PML-N is reaching out to independent candidates who won in the elections in order to further strengthen their position in the NA. If these disgruntled members join the PML-N, it will enhance the party’s standing in the assembly.
