Jenin, occupied West Bank — Suleiman Abu al-Waf’s life was forever changed by the “thumping sound” he heard one unforgettable day. On November 29, the 47-year-old physician was at home with his younger son and two daughters when the Israeli army raided the city’s refugee camp, causing chaos and devastation.

After the army withdrew, Suleiman’s 15-year-old son, Basil, asked to go out and play with his friends in a quiet neighborhood. When Suleiman heard a sound that indicated something was wrong, he called Basil but got no answer. He went outside and found another boy injured and was told that Basil was also injured. Sadly, Suleiman arrived to find that his son had been fatally shot by Israeli soldiers.

Basil and another young boy were killed by Israeli forces during the raid, which also resulted in 15 others being arrested from the refugee camp. The tragic deaths occurred during a period of escalating violence, in which hundreds of Palestinians have been killed.

Basil, a 10th-grade student, was described as a simple child who loved his school, books, and playing with friends. His uncle Hazem, who works in a medical analysis laboratory, affectionately remembers Basil as a kind and normal child. The family, who values education, is devastated by the loss of Basil, who they had hoped would pursue a career in medicine.

A close friend of Basil’s, Hassan al-Masry, recalls the happiness and laughter they shared just the day before Basil was killed. That joy was abruptly shattered, leaving Hassan and their friends in shock and grief.

The loss of Basil and the other young boy has left a deep and indescribable sorrow for their families and friends. It is a tragedy that only those who have experienced it can truly understand. The pain of their deaths weighs heavily on the community and leaves behind shattered dreams and immeasurable grief.
