The Torkham border between Pakistan and Afghanistan was closed for 10 days due to visa restrictions imposed on truck drivers by Islamabad. The closure resulted in significant economic losses for both countries, with daily losses estimated at around $100,000. The border has been closed several times in recent months due to various issues. The decision to reopen the border for commercial consignments was made in a meeting between Afghan and Pakistani authorities in Peshawar. Afghan drivers have been given visa and passport relaxations until March 31, after which they will be required to have the proper documents for entry into Pakistan. The closure has also affected trade routes to other crossings to Afghanistan, with thousands of trucks stranded on each side of the border.
