Today, the Islamabad High Court is set to hear Nawaz Sharif’s plea against his conviction in the Al-Azizia reference. The case involves his sentencing to seven years in jail and a fine of Rs1.5 billion and US$25 million for being unable to justify the source of funds used to set up Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment in Saudi Arabia. After being declared a proclaimed offender in 2020, Nawaz sought restoration of his appeals upon returning to Pakistan in October. The court revived his appeals and decided to conduct regular hearings. The court acquitted him in the Avenfields reference on November 29, and dismissed an appeal by the National Accountability Bureau in the Flagship Investment reference.
