As the opposition leader Alexei Navalny was laid to rest in Moscow, thousands of Russians gathered to pay their respects. His parents kissed him for the last time as mourners caressed his face and a priest placed a shroud over him. President Putin’s critics accused the authorities of his murder, but the Kremlin denied involvement.

Navalny’s supporters chanted slogans against the government as they mourned his passing. Despite the outlawing of his movement and accusations of being US-backed troublemakers, many people paid tribute to Navalny at his funeral and at a church service.

The funeral procession was attended by a large crowd, with people holding flowers and chanting for a free Russia and an end to war. Despite police presence, no intervention was reported as people expressed their grief and anger.

Navalny’s mother, top aides, and allies outside Russia paid their respects, while the state media gave little coverage to the funeral. Messages of sadness and defiance streamed on his blocked YouTube channel, reaching a quarter of a million viewers.

Navalny’s wife Yulia, living outside Russia with their children, thanked him for his happiness and pledged to continue his work. His allies accused Putin of having him murdered, while the Kremlin denied any involvement in his death.

Navalny’s legacy as Putin’s fiercest critic and his fight against corruption and injustice in Russia will continue to inspire many, despite the challenges and obstacles.
