The United States has used its veto power at least 34 times to block United Nations Security Council resolutions that criticize Israel. On Wednesday, the Security Council failed to adopt a resolution on the situation in Gaza as both competing draft resolutions were rejected by member states. A resolution drafted by the US, which called for “humanitarian pauses” and Israel’s right to defend itself, was vetoed by Russia and China. Another resolution sponsored by Russia, calling for a humanitarian ceasefire, did not receive enough votes to pass. This is not an unusual response from the US, as it has a history of vetoing resolutions critical of Israel or advocating for Palestinian statehood. Since 1945, the US has vetoed 34 resolutions related to Israel-Palestine, out of a total of 36 vetoed by the five permanent members of the Security Council. The majority of these resolutions were aimed at promoting peace in the long-standing conflict, including urging Israel to follow international laws, advocating for self-determination for Palestine, or condemning Israeli actions against Palestinians. The US has a total of 46 vetoed resolutions regarding Israel, with some notable examples being resolutions on Israel’s invasion of Lebanon and its annexation of the Golan Heights.
