During the Pakistan versus South Africa World Cup 2023 match, Aiden Markram glanced back nervously when he heard the stumps clatter. However, wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan grinned in response, avoiding any controversy. This incident brought back memories of Jonny Bairstow’s run-out in the Ashes series. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has now clarified the law. In this case, the ball from Haris Rauf passed Markram and bounced before reaching Rizwan. Markram tapped his foot in the crease and walked up the wicket while Rizwan under-armed the ball back towards the wickets. Markram was well out of his ground when the ball struck the stumps. The umpires had no decision to make as there was no appeal from Pakistan. If there had been an appeal, the match officials would have had to review replays. Markram’s ball was likely considered dead since Rizwan had the ball settled in his gloves before throwing it back. The umpires replaced the bails and the game continued without any further issues.
