The International Court of Justice has begun hearings in a case against Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, just a month after addressing another case where Israel is accused of genocidal acts in Gaza. This case is the largest case since 1945, involving at least 52 countries and highlighting the illegal occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem and the blockade of Gaza. The case was brought by a majority vote of the UN General Assembly and requests the court’s opinion on the legal consequences of the continuing Israeli occupation of Palestine. The court will hear arguments from 52 countries over the course of a week and will later publish a written opinion. Despite the ruling being non-binding, it is expected to carry significant weight and could add pressure on Israel and its allies to comply with international law.
