Water scarcity is an increasing concern on Mayotte, the poorest place in the European Union. Due to a prolonged drought and years of neglect and mismanagement, the taps only run one day out of three in this French territory off the coast of Africa. This has led to the resurgence of diseases like cholera and typhoid, prompting the French army to intervene and distribute water, as well as to calm tensions over water supplies.

The situation in Mayotte serves as a warning to the French government about the difficulties and expenses of addressing human-caused climate change in its various territories. Racha Mousdikoudine, a 38-year-old mother of two, struggles to do everyday tasks like washing dishes with bottled water, when it’s available. She believes that the water shortage in Mayotte is just a glimpse of what could become a global issue in the coming years. Mousdikoudine is part of a movement called “Mayotte is Thirsty,” which is demanding accountability for alleged embezzlement, leaks, and lack of investment in sustainable water supplies.

The movement has organized protests and is pushing for dialogue with authorities, but is also preparing to take further action if necessary. Mousdikoudine stresses the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that lives are at stake and that they cannot afford to wait for the authorities to take action. She believes that the solidarity of all French people is crucial in finding solutions and raising awareness about the water crisis in Mayotte, as well as in other French territories.
