When the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took over Wad Madani, the second largest city in Sudan, Afnan Hind and her family were forced to flee to a nearby town to stay with relatives. However, the paramilitary group also took control of the town, preventing residents from leaving. The RSF has a history of killing civilians, raping women and girls, and looting citizens.

Many people, including those who had previously fled war-torn areas, were trapped in Gezira, a state that serves as a major food supplier for Sudan. Thousands of people attempted to escape, but were denied passage through RSF checkpoints. Reports of human rights abuses, including sexual violence and killings, have emerged from those who are stuck in the area.

The United Nations and other agencies have called for the establishment of safe corridors to allow civilians to leave the conflict zones. However, aid shipments to RSF-controlled areas are hindered by the army, exacerbating the challenges of delivering life-saving supplies.

Relief agencies continue to work towards securing safe passage for civilians and delivering aid, but the RSF’s attempts to govern have led to desperation, anxiety, and stress among those trapped. Women, in particular, are at risk of sexual violence. Despite the obstacles, some have managed to escape, while others remain stranded, longing to reunite with their families.
