Sri Lanka cricketers declined to shake hands with the Bangladesh players after their intense match in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. It should be noted that Bangladesh eliminated Sri Lanka from the tournament with a three-wicket victory. However, the match was marred by heated exchanges between the players from both teams throughout the game. The tension started in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Angelo Mathews had an issue with his helmet, causing a delay. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed, arguing that Mathews had timed out, and he became the first player to be dismissed in this manner without facing a ball. After dismissing Shakib Al Hasan, Mathews sent him off with a fiery gesture. There was also an altercation between Sadeera Samarawickrama and Najmul Hasan Shanto over the dismissal of Samarawickrama’s teammate. The situation extended beyond the match as the Sri Lanka players did not greet the Bangladesh team after the game ended. In the post-match presentation, Mathews explained their decision to refuse shaking hands, stating that the Bangladesh players did not respect them or the sport.
