In Pune on Monday, Afghanistan achieved their third win of the World Cup, defeating Sri Lanka by seven wickets. After restricting Sri Lanka to 241 runs, Afghanistan successfully chased the target, finishing on 242-3. Azmatullah Omarzai remained unbeaten on 73, while captain Hashmatullah Shahidi contributed 58 not out. This victory marked Afghanistan’s first consecutive wins in the World Cup and boosted their chances of reaching the semi-finals. The Afghan bowlers played a crucial role in their success, dismissing Sri Lanka for a below-par score. With this win, Afghanistan moved up to fifth place in the points table.
