Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi secured a third term in office, winning 89.6% of the vote in the country’s recent election, according to the national election authority. Sisi campaigned against a small field of relatively unknown candidates, securing his final term in office per the Egyptian constitution. Despite a painful economic crisis and regional tensions, Sisi emerged victorious in a landslide victory. The runner-up, Hazem Omar, received 4.5% of the vote, and the turnout was “unprecedented” at 66.8% of registered voters. Sisi, a retired army field marshal, has faced criticism for his administration’s crackdown on dissent and the imprisonment of political opponents. His economic reforms, in pursuit of loans from the International Monetary Fund, have required severe austerity measures and multiple currency devaluations. The anticipated currency devaluation is expected to further fuel public discontent in the country.
