The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the schedule for the by-polls in Sindh’s Local Government (LG) elections. The by-polls will be held on November 5, 2022, to elect nine Union Council (UC) chairmen and 16 vice chairmen across Sindh.
This round of by-polls will cover 74 general seats throughout the province. The deadline for the submission of nominations is October 7, 2022.
In addition to the by-polls, the ECP has also unveiled the schedule for LG polls on 812 reserved seats in 29 districts. The nomination submission deadline for these polls is also October 7, and the polling will take place on October 20, 2022.
Earlier this month, the ECP issued directives to the chief secretaries of the four provinces and the chief commissioner of Islamabad to begin preparations for the general elections scheduled for the last week of January 2024.
The ECP has sent letters to all four provincial chief secretaries and Islamabad’s chief commissioner, emphasizing their obligation to assist the commission in organizing the general elections. The chief secretaries have been instructed to provide support to the district election commissions and ensure the provision of administrative and logistic assistance, as well as safe storage for the election materials.
The ECP also highlighted the need to provide tablets to the returning officers (RO) and ensure foolproof security arrangements at the locations where the election materials are stored.
Regarding the upcoming general elections in 2024, the ECP announced that the initial list for the delimitation of constituencies will be published on September 27, 2022. The final delimitation list will be published on November 30, 2022. The general elections will then be conducted in the last week of January 2024, following a 54-day election schedule.
