Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, has called for a virtual meeting with the heads of allied political parties, including Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the Chief of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the selection of a caretaker prime minister. Shehbaz Sharif aims to consult with his coalition partners and gather their input on the proposed candidates for this important role.

During a farewell dinner for members of parliament, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that the National Assembly will be dissolved on August 9. He emphasized the importance of cooperation and consultation with the coalition parties and the opposition leader in finalizing the name of the caretaker prime minister.

Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted the achievements of the PDM government during its tenure, stating that despite facing criticism and dealing with the aftermath of the previous administration’s actions, they were successful in saving Pakistan from a state of financial crisis within just 15 months.

Referring to the damage caused to institutions by the PTI leader, the former prime minister criticized his actions and reiterated that the upcoming general elections will be held based on the 2023 census.

The Caretaker Set-Up Process

According to constitutional provisions, it is the responsibility of the Prime Minister (as the leader of the House) and the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly to begin consultations for the selection of a caretaker prime minister. If they fail to reach a consensus, the matter will be referred to a parliamentary committee.

If the parliamentary committee is also unable to reach a decision, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will be tasked with choosing the caretaker prime minister.
