A bill proposing public hanging for rape offenders was blocked by the Senate with a majority vote of 24 against 14. In a rare occurrence, three major political parties – PML-N, PPP, and PTI joined to oppose the motion. The proposed amendment to the law seeking public executions for rapists through amendments to the Pakistan Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code was met with strong objection. Despite the severity of the crime, the proposed law was opposed due to concerns about its effectiveness in deterring sexual crimes, negative impact on society, and the erosion of respect for humanity. The Senate also held a protest against alleged rigging in the recently held general elections, leading to a decision to hold a debate on the matter today.
