Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, has criticized Ukraine’s proposed peace plan and the United Nations’ attempt to revive the Black Sea grain initiative, stating that both are unrealistic. Lavrov made these comments following a week of intense diplomatic efforts at the annual gathering of world leaders at UN headquarters in New York. Ukraine and its Western allies have been seeking support for Kyiv in its conflict against Russia’s invasion of its territory.

In regards to Ukraine’s 10-point peace blueprint, Lavrov said, “It is completely not feasible. It is not possible to implement this. It’s not realistic and everybody understands this, but at the same time, they say this is the only basis for negotiations.” He suggested that if Kyiv and the West continued this stance, the conflict would most likely be resolved on the battlefield.

Lavrov also addressed the issue of the Black Sea grain initiative, stating that Russia withdrew from the project because promises made to Russia were not fulfilled. These promises included the removal of sanctions on a Russian bank and its reconnection to the global Swift payment system. Lavrov dismissed the UN’s proposals to revive the export corridor for Ukrainian agricultural products, describing them as “simply not realistic.”

In addition, Lavrov announced his plans to visit Pyongyang next month to continue negotiations with his North Korean counterpart, following recent agreements made between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Moscow.

Accusing the West of having a neo-colonial mindset, Lavrov criticized its approaches in the Global South to gain support for Ukraine in the war. He referred to the West as an “empire of lies” and claimed that a “global majority” was being deceived by its actions.
