A bill to be voted on next week in Russia aims to confiscate assets of individuals spreading ‘deliberately false’ information amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The proposed law, developed by the State Duma, would allow for the confiscation of money, valuables, and other property from those deemed to spread false information about Moscow’s military actions in the conflict. The bill also targets those inciting extremist activities or calling for sanctions against Russia, as well as those discrediting the armed forces. Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin stated that the bill is intended to punish individuals who “pour mud” on Russia and its soldiers involved in the war, and it will be submitted to the Duma on Monday. The existing law against “discrediting” the Russian military has been used to silence critics of President Vladimir Putin, with multiple activists, bloggers, and citizens receiving long jail terms under this law. Ongoing attacks in Ukraine, including shelling and a drone hitting a gas pipeline, have further escalated tensions, with the EU announcing plans to increase ammunition production and impose new sanctions on Russia.
