The Russian parliament has passed a bill that will allow authorities to confiscate the assets of those convicted of spreading “deliberately false information” about the military. Once signed into law by President Vladimir Putin, the legislation will enable the government to seize money, valuables, and other assets of those who criticize the war in Ukraine. The bill targets those convicted of publicly inciting “extremist activities” or discrediting the armed forces. The legislation is part of a government crackdown on dissent, which has resulted in the imprisonment, detention, or fines of thousands of activists, bloggers, and other individuals who have spoken out against the war. Despite this crackdown, the Kremlin claims that Russian society is united in supporting the war.
