On February 24, 2024, the world marked the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The day was filled with significant developments in the ongoing conflict.
The United States issued sanctions against over 500 Russian-linked targets and imposed new export restrictions on nearly 100 entities for their support of Russia, marking the largest single tranche of penalties since the conflict began. The European Union also announced its 13th package of sanctions, targeting nearly 200 additional entities and individuals involved in the war.
The United Kingdom imposed sanctions on officials overseeing the penal colony where Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny died. Italian, Canadian, and Belgian prime ministers, along with the president of the European Commission, traveled to Kyiv from Poland to show solidarity with Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden participated in a video conference call with the G7 leaders, chaired by the Italian prime minister. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for increased efforts in defence, emphasizing support for Ukraine’s self-defence.
As the conflict continues, more than 14 million people have been displaced, and over 10,000 civilians have been killed, according to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. Switzerland has plans to organise a high-level peace conference for Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that Russia’s strategic nuclear forces have been modernized, and the Ukrainian Air Force reported downing a Russian spy plane. Russian forces have been on the offensive, with attacks in various regions leading to civilian casualties.
President Biden has urged lawmakers to unblock a $60 billion aid package for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of supporting the country in its time of need.
