A member of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has been arrested for allegedly shouting “Pakistan Zindabad” during a protest in 2022, according to Indian media reports. The arrest of Danayakapura Ravi, 34, was made in Karnataka on March 4 following a complaint by a Congress worker named Kannambadi Kumar. The protest had taken place at Mandya’s Sanjay Circle on December 22, 2022, in response to remarks made by former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The police registered a case against Ravi after Congress workers were heard chanting pro-Pakistan slogans on February 27. Three people were subsequently arrested based on evidence from the Forensic Science Laboratory, witness statements, and other proof. Ravi is set to appear in court, and efforts are being made to apprehend other suspects. The FIR was filed under sections 153B and 505 of the law. The BJP has claimed that Ravi’s arrest is politically motivated, as he is a farmer who only speaks Kannada and may have been confused while chanting slogans. The BJP also accused the Congress party of attacking its workers unfairly after pro-Pakistan slogans were heard at the Vidhana Soudha.
