The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has exposed the power distribution companies (Discos) for fraudulent overcharging, leading to billions of rupees in losses for consumers. Senator Raza Rabbani has called the inquiry report the “mother of all scams” and demanded legal action against the Discos. The report found that billing practices differed from actual meter readings, resulting in inflated bills and unjust charges. NEPRA has initiated legal action against K-Electric and other distribution companies for overcharging millions of consumers in July and August. The report also highlighted billing cycles extending beyond the 30-day period and unjustified charges for more than 40 days of billing. These findings have raised questions about the integrity of the Discos’ entire revenue stream, prompting demands for adjustment of overcharged amounts against users’ bills and placing CEOs of the Discos on the Exit Control List. This comes at a time when the Discos are conducting a nationwide campaign against power theft.
