In a significant development, the members of the Quaid-e-Azam University Syndicate have unanimously decided to revive the students’ union, which will serve as the elected body representing all students of QAU.
The syndicate meeting was held recently, with the esteemed presence of Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa of Pakistan. Chaired by the University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Niaz Akhtar, the meeting focused on discussing the achievements and challenges faced by the university.
One of the key challenges discussed was related to land grabbing, which has been a matter of concern for the university. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa expressed deep concern over the longstanding land issues and instructed the prioritization and speedy resolution of these challenges.
The meeting also covered discussions on the recommendations put forth by the Selection Board. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa emphasized the importance of strict adherence to rules and regulations to maintain the integrity of the institution.
The issue of engaging students in positive and healthy activities was also brought up during the meeting. Waseem Ajmal Chaudhary, Secretary Federal Education, expressed his support for the students’ union, highlighting that it was banned in 1984. However, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa clarified that the ban was repealed by an Act of Parliament in 1989.
Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa further mentioned a 1993 judgment of the Supreme Court, which disapproved of students’ involvement in politics. However, the judgment also recognized and appreciated the existence of an elected body of students to address their issues and organize co-curricular activities. The Senate of Pakistan also passed a unanimous Resolution 335 in 2017, supporting the revival of the students’ union.
Following these discussions, the syndicate unanimously decided to revive the Students’ Union, which will serve as the elected body for all students of QAU. A committee, comprising the Registrar and the Director of the School of Law, was formed to propose the modalities of elections and other relevant issues. The committee will study past practices, rules, and international best practices, such as the Oxford Union, and will submit its report to the syndicate within two weeks.
During the syndicate meeting, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa also emphasized the importance of environmental sustainability. He stressed the need to implement measures that protect the environment, including effective waste management and sustainable water consumption practices.
The syndicate members were committed to maintaining a safe and drug-free campus environment. Measures to eliminate the presence of drugs and arms on the campus were discussed, highlighting their dedication to the safety and well-being of all members of the university community.
Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa also visited the Quaid-e-Azam University campus during the meeting and instructed the relevant authorities to address campus-related concerns in coordination with the Capital Development Authority (CDA). This visit reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare and progress of the university.
