Due to the entry of protesting groups into Makhachkala airport in the Russian region, all flights to and from the airport have been suspended. On Sunday evening, hundreds of people stormed the main airport in Dagestan to protest against the arrival of a flight from Israel. The airport has been closed by authorities, and police are present at the facility. Although there have been no reports of arrests, there have been injuries. The Russian carrier Red Wings operated the airliner that was targeted. Social media footage shows protesters waving Palestinian flags and checking the passports of passengers who arrived in Makhachkala. One protester was seen holding a sign condemning child killers being present in Dagestan. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office called on Russian law enforcement authorities to protect the safety of Israeli citizens and Jews, and to take action against the rioters and incitement against Jews and Israelis. The Ministry of Internal Affairs for Russia’s North Caucasian Federal District has emphasized that CCTV footage will be used to identify those involved in storming the airport, who will face legal consequences. While expressing support for Gaza, the regional Dagestan government appealed for calm and urged citizens not to participate in such protests. The government warned protesters not to continue illegal acts or interfere with the work of airport employees. The incident occurs as Israel continues expanded ground operations in Gaza, alongside heavy aerial bombardments. The airport airfield has been cleared of unauthorized individuals, according to Russia’s civilian aviation agency, Rosaviatsia, but the airport is expected to remain closed to incoming aircraft until November 6. In another Russian republic, Kabardino-Balkaria, a Jewish center in the city of Nalchik was reportedly set on fire earlier on Sunday.
