The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has announced that it will be holding a rally in Lahore on Wednesday. The decision was made during a PPP Lahore meeting, led by Chaudhary Aslam Gul. The rally will begin from the Press Club and proceed towards Mall Road.
In a statement, Chaudhary Aslam Gul stated that the PPP stands with the people and has decided to protest against the rampant inflation and skyrocketing electricity prices in the country. The movement against inflated electricity bills is gaining momentum nationwide, with people taking to the streets and burning their bills in protest.
Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has also announced their support for the cause and will observe a countrywide strike on September 2 against the increase in electricity prices, adding to the mounting public outcry.
Nationwide Protests against Inflated Power Bills
The issue of inflated power bills has triggered protests across the country, ranging from Karachi to Khyber. In Karachi, people have raised their voices against the exorbitant bills sent by K-Electric, the city’s sole power supplier. Many individuals claim that the bills they receive exceed their monthly salaries.
In Peshawar, large numbers of people have taken to the streets to display their discontent. Citizens are no longer willing to remain silent in the face of this perceived injustice. Traders from Ganj Bazaar and Lahore Square have also symbolically burned their power bills to highlight their protest.
Similarly, protesters in Rawalpindi gathered at Committee Chowk and set their bills on fire. They demanded that the government take action against the imposed taxes on electricity.
In Gujranwala, protesters have besieged the Gujranwala Electric Power Company office, expressing their dissatisfaction with expensive electricity.
Other cities, including Narowal, Attock, Sargodha, and Haripur, have also witnessed protests against high power bills.
